Product review: Treat A Dog’s PupLounge Memory Foam Orthopedic Bed

Today, we are reviewing Treat A Dog‘s PupLounge Memory Foam Orthopedic Dog Bed. With Beau getting older (we estimate he is around 9 now) we decided it was time for him to have a more supportive bed to lay his meaty head at night. I began the search for his new bed with the following requirements:

Source: treatadog.com

  1. a bolster bed shape – Beau likes to sleep either curled up in a ball, surrounded by cushioning, or (when it’s warmer) with his head resting on the bolster like a pillow
  2. a removable, washable cover – the easier to remove, wash and put back on, the better!
  3. a supportive center that will not flatten quickly
  4. an affordable price, preferably under $150.

After quite a bit of research, I narrowed our options to the PupLounge and Casper’s Dog Mattress (if anyone has it – let us know how you like it in the comments!) I decided to go with the PupLounge over the Casper for a few reasons. First, it had consistently great reviews everyone I looked, whereas the Casper’s were a bit mixed. Second, the PupLounge comes with a guarantee not to flatten for ten (10!) years. And finally, thanks to an end of year sale, I was able to snag it for 60% of – read on…I’ll share the promo code at the end!

Deceivingly small boxes.

I placed an order for two large PupLounges (at 60% off, might as well get one for the foster dogs, too!) on a Tuesday, and they arrived just three days later, on Friday. I was a little skeptical when the boxes arrived because they looked kind of small (but heavy!) but once I opened them I saw that the memory foam was simply vacuum sealed, to save space.

As soon as we got the plastic wrap off of the memory foam centers, Beau was already curling up one, choosing it over his bed in the living room, and the couch. I think this says something because Beau sometimes has fear of novel, new things, but with the PupLounge he immediately found it safe and comfortable. (Too bad the memory foam was supposed to sit for a bit to rise – Beau isn’t very good at reading instructions!)

Beau claims his PupLounge.

The PupLounge came in multiple pieces that were a little tricky to put together, but the instructions in the package were helpful. We got both of ours put together, once the memory foam had risen, in about 10 minutes with two of us working on them.

The dogs took to the PupLounge’s right away on night one, with two issues. First, the bolster does not go all the way around (I knew this going in but decided to try it with Beau) and when I checked on Beau throughout the night he was often half on/half off. This was an easy fix – the next night I just flipped it around so that the side without a bolster is now against the wall. Problem #1 solved.

The second issue, though, is the biggie. The fabric on the beds, although very easy to wash or spot clean, is crinkly and loud. We can hear any movement that the dogs make throughout the night (these beds live in our bedroom) which is disturbing for our sleep, and I can’t imagine it’s comfortable for the dogs, either. I’ve somewhat rectified this issue by placing large fleece blankets over the beds, which the dogs seem to prefer, but still if the blankets fall off the noise is back.

Mama Julep took to her PupLounge right away.

Overall, I give the PupLounge 3 out of 5 stars.

It is supportive and easy to clean, and the 10 year guarantee not to flatten is impressive. However, the fabric is crinkly and loud, and the full price ($299 for the large size) is very expensive. Looks like the search for that perfect dog bed continues!

Promo code for 60% off (note I can’t guarantee it will still work): 2018

Purchased the PupLounge Memory Foam Orthopedic Bed in November and paid 150. and it already is falling apart.. the stitching is all coming apart. Contact them and they only will honor a 30 days policy.. Not worth the money.. there are other options for this quality for a 1/2 the cost.

THanks for the review and also your comment CHarlotte Halpin Skiffington . . very disappointing that it started falling apart so quickly and they only guarantee for 30 days – ridiculous! Your comment just sealed the deal that I have to look elsewhere . . . Have you found any of the “other options” you mention for half the cost – ?

My large memory foam bed pillow top filler disintegrated in less than a year, and they said it is beyond the 30 days. I would NEVER recommend them!!

I too experienced poor craftsmanship when it came to the Treat a Dog bed cover. The seam allowances aren’t finished so when you wash the cover the fabric starts to unravel and the zipper band tears away from the fabric. I washed the bed cover 4x max before the caber started to fall apart. I contacted their customer care but they were no help and have a strict 30 day return policy even for a defective product. Do not buy this bed! It won’t hold up to normal washing!

Out of the box, the bed looked great. The first time I picked it up to move it, the bolster tore from the flat part of the bed about 4 inches. I thought, “OK, if it gets worse, we’ll call it in”. A couple months of wear and tear from the dog moving around in it extended the tear to about 10 inches. We contacted Treat a Dog to ask for a repair / replacement of the cover and were told flatly that we were out of our 30 day (30 DAY? !!!) warranty period. After passing through apparently 2 layers of management, with the same answer, it looks like we’re on our own. Out of the box, it’s a nice bed. It ought to be for as much as it costs. However, don’t expect much for durability, and absolutely don’t expect much for product support.

I received our first bed two weeks ago. The foam never reached its full thickness. The first time I contacted the company they said it could take up to 24 hours, ok. Then I called 24 hours later and was told a week for the foam to get its thickness. I waited 10 days. It never got beyond 3 inches and had 4 creases from being boxed. Called them the third time, was asked to send pictures and I did. Then was told it would be reviewed; three days later I was told would be getting another bed which I received today. Opened the foam and notice the has what looks like water damage with a dark brown spot about 1/4 size of foam. I am extremely unhappy with the product. I was told this was the final sale.

This has been my experience, as well. Foam mattress stained, deformed, and never fully filled out after 10 days. Received a replacement after multiple emails with customer service, and replacement bed/mattress is no better than the original. Disappointed.

I bought this bed a year ago, 2 months ago the seams were not holding up and a large rip has developed. I sent a letter to Treat-a-Dog about the issue and the quality of their stitching. I received th following:

The straps on the car cover we ordered pulled off on the first road trip. They refused to send a warranty replacement. From the reviews on the Better Business website I am one of many people who thinks that their products and customer service both suck.

Mine did the same thing! They basically choose to take zero responsibility for it too! Let’s make sure this company fails if they do not want to stand behind there product!

I bought the memory foam bed. It worked out well until the foam began to smell after a couple of months. The cover is washable, but the foam is not easy to clean. When I contacted Treatadog, they gave me a two page set of instructions to clean the foam but it contained a warning to use gloves because of the chemicals contained in the foam. Since these chemicals are harmful to me, I do not want my dog near them. I threw the bed out.

I bought two of these for my 100 lb Dobermans. They use the beds however covers are not well sewn and zippers break. Threads were left on and catch in zipper. Not waterproof or even water repellent. My female has incontinence problems and covers leak thru to foam. I have $300 invested and cannot get replacement covers. I am told by paws.com , the new company, they will have new and better covers in “a few months.”.

I bought 3 of these very expensive Treat a Dog Beds..2 for friends and one for my puggle. I just disassembled it to wash and the gauzy fabric covering the fluff in the bolster disintergrated and the fluff is spilling all over the place. The outer covering washed ok but now I have loose fluff. what a mess. I’m very disappointed. Don’t buy this bed! crap product

Bolster cover and stuffing is in a pieces. Never washed that portion of the bed. Bought the large… paid over 150 bucks. Definitely not worth it . Plastic zippers to complete the cheapness of the product. I didn’t look but odds are it was made in China.

Clean, modern design and easy to navigate—great job on the website! Everything is well-organized, and the layout is visually appealing. I had no trouble finding what I needed. It’s a smooth and enjoyable browsing experience from start to finish.

While impressive for about one year, all of ours are literally falling apart. The stitching has come undone, and the top material used to make the bolster is disintegrating before our eyes. It is a shame because our big dog loves the bed, but the quality and workmanship are absolutely terrible. I am in the market for new beds now but will definitely not be going with Treat A Dog beds!! I am a veterinarian and discourage my clients from buying this brand.
